Speech boot camp

Speech Boot Camp - Introduction to public speaking
Andrew Pudewa
ISBN: 9780984099085

Hi Everyone

I have a few public speaking things on at the moment so I got this out of my cupboard.  Hidden away amongst my many resources this is a little gem.  For anyone who has not discovered Institute for Excellence Writing their resources are well worth the investment.  I have used many of their resources for teaching and I used the university essay writing DVD set when I first started my studies.  Fantastic teaching and writing tools, and this one is also brilliant.

It is aimed at students grades 6-12 (my country that is yr 7-13).  What I really like is the student examples.  These speeches are extremely well presented and gives other children/young adults a feel for public speaking.  Included is a downloadable e-book which includes handouts, lesson plans and evaluation forms taking much of the prep work out of lesson planning.

I for one, like most of the products from this company and I tick the boxes for this disc set too.  Have a read of the description it explains much of what is included on the discs.

Description:

Targeting students in grades 6-12 and showing actual footage of students' speeches, this fast paced public speaking course is presented on four DVD's with downloadable e-book including handouts for "trainees."  Lesson plans and evaluation forms are provided for a facilitator.

Hi Everyone

I am so pleased to be a part of this book tour.  I received this book, opened it and it was love at first sight.  How could I not find this book beautiful!

Before I talk about the story, I have to talk about the illustrations.  Even though I loved the story, it is the illustrations that give me the biggest connection to this book.  Each illustration is felted!  The work involved in creating these pictures must have taken hours upon hours.  I know because I love needle felting.  When I read about the illustrator I had to go back and look at the pictures again, and again.  I took a look at her web page and I have fallen in love with her work.  When I think of the intricate work involved in her pictures I am left with my mouth open in owe.

Now for the story... it is so cute and adorable I just want a puppy.  I love that the crown is made by the dad/king.  I love how he makes it (read it).  And as for the storyline it is just perfect for any prem baby or sibbling.  Actually anyone will enjoy this book just like I have. I will treasure this little gem.

Dragon Teeth

Hi Everyone

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book.  I like the author and I loved the movies.  This book... I am closing now.  I am up page 109 and it still hasn't grabbed me.  It is not often that I give up on a book, but there is better on my TBR list awaiting me.

Now just to let you know that it is my choice to close this book.  It isn't a bad read by any means, it just isn't doing it for me.  That is - me - not the rest of the world.  I am 99% certain my father in law will thoroughly enjoy it.  So I am not giving this a bad review!  It is a good read for anyone that is into this kind of story.  I can tell you that by page 109 all the characters are introduced and connected well; the story is well underway; and, they are just about to finally reach their exploration area.  What I struggled with was the lack of action and adventure.  So far, it was just a well put together story with a great amount of historical asset.

I put it out there to all my followers and regular readers... if you think I should continue reading then leave a comment and I will pick it back up and continue reading.  I can handle continuing if you recommend me to do so.

Description:

Michael Crichton's recently discovered novel—an adventure set in the Wild West during the golden age of fossil hunting.

The year is 1876. Warring Indian tribes still populate America’s western territories even as lawless gold-rush towns begin to mark the landscape. In much of the country it is still illegal to espouse evolution. Against this backdrop two monomaniacal paleontologists pillage the Wild West, hunting for dinosaur fossils, while surveilling, deceiving and sabotaging each other in a rivalry that will come to be known as the Bone Wars.

Into this treacherous territory plunges the arrogant and entitled William Johnson, a Yale student with more privilege than sense. Determined to survive a summer in the west to win a bet against his arch-rival, William has joined world-renowned paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh on his latest expedition.  But when the paranoid and secretive Marsh becomes convinced that William is spying for his nemesis, Edwin Drinker Cope, he abandons him in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a locus of crime and vice. William is forced to join forces with Cope and soon stumbles upon a discovery of historic proportions.  With this extraordinary treasure, however, comes exceptional danger, and William’s newfound resilience will be tested in his struggle to protect his cache, which pits him against some of the West’s most notorious characters.

The storm sister

The Storm Sister

The Storm Sister (The Seven Sisters)
Hi Everyone

It has taken me a while to read this book because I was reading a couple of other books at the same time.  I couldn't help opening this when it arrived in the mail, and I had others that I was part way through.  Then came the dilemma because I wanted to be reading this over and above all the other books on my TBR list.

Next problem... it is 699 pages long!  Hence not a quick read.

But last night I lay aside the finished Storm Sister and I have found out all about Ally's past and present.  I have to make a claim here, I think this book was even better than the first!  I thought the first quarter bought Ally too much grief too quickly, but by the end it all became a part of the story.  The past was well intertwined with the present and I quickly became absorbed in the two stories interlinking the past and present history of Ally D'Apli'se.  What I am left wondering is the connection with her name... this was touched on with some of Theo's comments in the first stages of the book, but Ally bushed it off.  I sit here writing this for you all and I realise I never got the answers to her brush offs.  If anyone did connect to this within the book and can give me some light into the significance of her name and Theo's statements (if your reading or have read Storm Sister) then please leave me a comment and enlighten me.

As for all other questions to Ally's connection with her past, I was was left totally fulfilled.  I have ordered the next book... There are still questions and mysteries to be answered.  Some of which I have already answered and want to see if I am correct.  The rest is me just wanting to know what the next sister will bring to this journey.

What a brilliant series this is turning out to be!

Description:

Ally D'Aplièse is about to compete in one of the world's most perilous yacht races, when she hears the news of her adoptive father's sudden, mysterious death. Rushing back to meet her five sisters at their family home, she discovers that her father - an elusive billionaire affectionately known to his daughters as Pa Salt - has left each of them a tantalising clue to their true heritage.

Ally has also recently embarked on a deeply passionate love affair that will change her destiny forever. But with her life now turned upside down, Ally decides to leave the open seas and follow the trail that her father left her, which leads her to the icy beauty of Norway...

There, Ally begins to discover her roots - and how her story is inextricably bound to that of a young unknown singer, Anna Landvik, who lived there over 100 years before, and sang in the first performance of Grieg's iconic music set to Ibsen's play 'Peer Gynt'. As Ally learns more about Anna, she also begins to question who her father, Pa Salt, really was. And why is the seventh sister missing?

Following the bestselling The Seven Sisters, The Storm Sister is the second book in Lucinda Riley's spellbinding series based loosely on the mythology surrounding the famous star constellation.

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

Hi Everyone

Well, this one was interesting...

I think you need to be in a certain place to understand totally the concepts within this book.  I for one, would need read this more than once because there is so much to take in.  But, there are parts that in fact have a point.

I saw this popping up in every shop I entered and all over the internet.  I decided to read this with an open mind because it is a little different from other 'self help' or 'spiritual books' that I have previously read.  I actually enjoyed it and got a lot out of it.  There are a few things that I just don't reside with yet or quite understand also.  I am open to the things that I have taken from this book.  There definitely needs to be a little more now thought captured in my day.  I live totally on my 'busy-ness' and 'go do it' attitude that often leaves me stressing about all I have to achieve, that I am often left overwhelmed or worried about far to much.  When I read this book, cleverly outlined in question answer format,  I closed the final page with a few 'yeah I get it moments'.  I also close the book knowing that there is a lot that I haven't taken in.  I guess it is a book that each time I read it I will get something new from it.  I think most people who have read this would agree that to live this way would take a lot, and I mean a LOT of thought change and practice.  As for a little more 'now' in my life... after reading this I am trying it out, just a little anyway.

Description:

Eckhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Hi Everyone

I have to admit that  I listened to this book on audio... and loved it.  I walked day after day while listening to this;  I cooked to my hearts content because I couldn't help but listen a little more.  I am pleased I got this on audio because listening to the voice and the story made it come alive.  It was narrated in first person and the reader couldn't have given a better presentation.  I felt like it was Lily telling her story.

This story is one that needs to be told more.  There are so many stories out there of other cultures but I haven't come across many, until recently, from this culture.  They have a story to tell, especially the women.  Lily and Snow Flower were so gracious.  They followed tradition to the end of time.  They had their feet bound and mothers that thought they were doing the right thing for their families.  As I listened I could feel for the girls, and the mothers.  I could see the tradition, hardship, love, and beyond the traditions.  I saw two beautiful girls who grow to be women based on the past.  They made many of the same mistakes of their mothers.  Yet, all they all wanted was a better future.  Did they get it... I don't know that they did.  Maybe.  Maybe not.

Misunderstanding became a curtain that divided the girls, to a degree anyway.  Love and tradition changed some of this.  Even as I finish the book I am still left with Lily and Snow Flower deeply embedded in my heart.

I would like to say read this but I think I would would rather recommend you listen to this one.  Hear it from the voice of the narrator is if it was the voice of Lily.

Description:

In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, “old same,” in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men.

As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on fans, compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Together, they endure the agony of foot-binding, and reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their deep friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart.

Worthy of repeating...

Hi Everyone,

Last night we had wild weather!  This morning, I awoke to the wind still gashing upon my window and it was cold, very cold.  Now I look out my window and the sun shining and the plants are actually sparkling.  It's quite amazing how the weather can change.  Author John Muir got it quite right with this quote so I thought it was 'worthy of repeating'.

Reckless

Hi Everyone

I am a huge fan of Cornellia Funke's writing, so after reading the Inkheart series I quickly purchased Reckless.  This is book 1 in the mirror series and I have been left wanting to read book 2.

This book is easier to read than any of the books in the Inkheart series and a lot smaller.  If you have any children who would like to read Inkheart but are put off by the size of it, then give them Reckless instead.  Reckless had an array of goyls, faires, stone/gem creatures and plenty of action just like Inkheart.  I enjoyed the world just like Inkworld, except this one is inside a mirror rather than a book.  I liked all the characters, but Clara kind of annoyed me (there needs to be one character that does this to you while you read, and Clara was it for me in this book). There was still plenty of action, as in all of Cornellia Funkes writing that I have previously read.  I found this to be just as much of a page turner and I wasn't left disappointed in any way.

What I think most of this book is there are similarities to the Inkworld of Inkheart, but in an easier to read format.  I would be inclined to give this to younger readers before giving them the Inkheart series.  I found the Inkheart series, by book 3, a concentrated read whereas this book I zoomed through.

So, I remain a fan of Cornellia Funke.  Often when I enjoy a series I become disappointed in an authors second attempt.  Not the case for me with Cornellia Funke.  I love her imagination and her worlds.  She takes me to places I can only find in my imagination.

Description:

Jacob Reckless is a treasure hunter in a world behind a mirror, a place of dangereous magic.  There, accompanied by fox, a shape sifting girl, he's lived up to his name.

But disaster strikes when his younger brother follows him through the glass.  Unless Jacob can save him, his brother will tun to stone...

Into the Water

Hi Everyone

This is fantastic!  Absolutely brilliant!

If you have read The Girl On the Train then I am pretty sure you will enjoy this one too.  I have enjoyed it more than The Girl On the Train.  I don't know whether this is because I understand Paula Hawkins writing style or if it is just better, but found the writing of this one brilliant.

When I first started to read Into the Water I thought maybe I would have needed a notebook to keep track of all the characters.  No need.  It wasn't long and I was so into the plot that I knew every character and where they belonged. I had to know what each character was up to.  Where Paula Hawkins was leading me with them.  Who did what.  It seemed like the whole community had lost the plot, literally!  By the end, the outcome was totally different from whom I thought.  Having made that statement, I think at times I had blamed nearly every character for some part of some event.

Right down to the very end, this book took me on a roller coaster ride of guessing.  All I can say is this is a brilliant piece of literary work and I can't wait to see what Paula Hawkins come up with next.

What's happening?...

Hi Everyone,

It's official I have issues!  I am reading too many books at once so I haven't talked to you in a few days.  These books are just too good to choose one, or close... so I am reading them all at once.

How did this happen?  Normally I have one, maybe two books, on the go at one time.

Well, first of all I ordered Into the Water through the library.  They didn't have on their shelves yet and I thought they should. And I want to read it. So place a request, and they got it in.  I was the first to receive it, and it was so new, and I loved the last book.... I had to open it even though I was reading Reckless.

That was the start of it all.  Things were fine.  But then... The Storm Sisters arrived.  I am loving this series so much!  I couldn't help it, I had to just take a peak inside and now 309 pages in I cant close it.

And... While I cook, clean, garden and drive I am listening to Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.  My house is looking so tidy as I just keep cleaning so I can listen just a little more!

Who can feel my pain!  Four good books and not enough hours in a day.  Why did I open them all?

There you have it.  I have issues.  I never use to read like this, but there are so many good books out there.
So today I give you a sneak peak at these books and I will review them all for you really soon.  I am nearly finished two of them and I can't wait to tell you all about them.
